Chandīgarh: A 21-year-old was arrested by UT police for snatching a cell phone from a girl. The complainant had reported that an unknown person snatched her mobile phone near the Judicial Academy of Sector 43. The police had registered a case and later the suspect, identified as Vikas, a resident of the village of Milak in the district from Mohali, was arrested. TNS
Batteries stolen from vehicles
Chandīgarh: Thieves stole batteries from six vehicles parked in Mani Majra and two from a gallop in Daria. According to the police, complainant Gurwinder Singh, a resident of Dera Sahib, Mani Majra, reported that the battery of his car and those of five other vehicles parked near Shivalik Garden, were stolen between January 22 and 24. In another incident, plaintiff Amarnath Mallah reported that two batteries were stolen from a gallop parked in Daria on the night of January 23-24. TNS
Theft from a store in Mani Majra
Chandīgarh: Coins worth around 50,000 rupees were stolen from the cash register of a confectionery in the Mani Majra car market. The theft was reported on the night of January 23-24. The police registered a case on a complaint by Deepak Kumar. TNS
Servant sentenced for theft
Chandīgarh: A domestic helper has been booked for allegedly stealing a laptop computer from the house of a woman in Sector 35. A case has been filed against the suspect, Shibu, a resident of Mohlai, at the Police Station in Sector 36. TNS
Peddler detained with heroin
Chandīgarh: A drug dealer was arrested by the UT Police Criminal Branch with 50g of heroin. The suspect has been identified as Panna from Kulu district in Himachal Pradesh. He was arrested in Sector 31. A case under the NDPS Act was registered at the Police Station in Sector 31. TNS

Mohali: Top seed Harmanjit Singh defeated Kulish Chhonkar (8-1) in the Boys U-18 first round match on the opening day of the Roots-AITA CS(7) National Ranking Championship on Tuesday. Vansh Sharma also took the lead beating Maharashtra’s Ayaan Qureshi (8-5), while Pragun Thakur beat Aryan Aggarwal (8-3). Agnivesh Bhardwaj also advanced to the next round beating Tanav Gupta (8-0). Chandigarh’s Kartik Sunil Kumar defeated Gurbaaz Singh (8-7(5)). In the girls U-16 first round matches, Akshita Vashisht beat Mokshika Yadav (8-3) and Akshdha Sharma outplayed Kritika Sharma (8-5). Delhi’s Kanak Shekhawat also advanced to the next round beating Mankirat Kaur (8-3) and Rasha Saini Sood ousting Florence Bhumak (8-7(4)). Akshita Vashisht won her daughters’ U-18 draw by beating Poonam (8-2). Ira Chadha beat Kritika Singh (8-5), Kritika Sharma beat Mokshika Yadav (8-6) and MehakPreet Kaur dominated Mannat (8-5). 15,400 take the online exam
Chandīgarh: As many as 15,400 undergraduate and postgraduate students appeared on the second day of the odd semester online exams at Punjab University on Tuesday. Dr. Jagat Bhushan, Controller of Examinations, said 47 examinations for undergraduate courses and 18 for postgraduate courses were conducted. The exams went smoothly according to plan and no untoward incidents were reported, he said.
