Users spend $133 billion on mobile apps in 2021
The mobile application market is growing more and more every year, and the numbers clearly show it. New Sensor Tower research released on Tuesday found that users spent $133 billion on apps in 2021, 20% more than in 2020. Interestingly, Apple’s App Store continues to generate more revenue than Google Play.
Sensor Tower research (via TechCrunch) includes data from both the App Store and Google Play. Overall, Apple’s App Store alone accounted for $85.1 billion of this market, growing 17.7% year-over-year. While Android dominates the market share, users spent less with the Google Play Store than with the App Store. During the year, Google Play recorded revenue of $47.9 billion.
Following the surge in adoption and spending for mobile games and non-gaming applications in 2020, market trends have started to normalize in 2021, with global consumer spending expected to reach approximately $133 billion in 2020. in-app purchases, premium apps and app store subscriptions. and Google Play, according to data from Sensor Tower Store Intelligence. This represents a 19.7% year-over-year growth from $111.1 billion in 2020, almost mirroring the 21% year-over-year growth in consumer spending recorded in 2019.
The research notes that the growth is due to the normalization of the market following the impacts of COVID-19 last year, so it is plausible to imagine that the results will be even better in 2022.
Unsurprisingly, TikTok is the top-grossing app of the year, with the video platform hitting $3 billion in revenue in June. Other apps that drove the mobile app market in 2021 were YouTube, Tinder and Disney+. Apps such as Tencent Video, iQIYI, Piccoma, QQ Music, and Youku are also among the top-grossing apps in Apple’s App Store.
When it comes to download numbers, TikTok remains number one on the list. However, YouTube, WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook and Zoom are close behind.
Sensor Tower even published a ranking dedicated to games. On the App Store alone, gamers are expected to spend $52.3 billion by the end of the year. On iOS, the most downloaded game in 2021 was PUBG Mobile, while Honor of Kings led revenue generation for the year.
