The federal government will conduct an audit of mobile coverage in the country to identify hotspots and help guide it in areas for investment starting next year.

A statement released by Communications Minister Michelle Rowland on Monday said $20 million had been earmarked for the connectivity improvement plan for regional and rural Australia.

He said a regional telecommunications review in 2021 expressed community members’ concerns about predictive coverage maps issued by providers and said an audit would help validate them.

Presumably, the focus will be on rural and regional areas where coverage isn’t half as good as in metropolitan areas.

Rowland said: “Many Australians know that mobile coverage maps don’t always reflect reality. This is why the Albanian government is keeping its commitment to undertake an independent audit of mobile coverage.

“The results will help industry and government make more impactful investment decisions and ensure that coverage maps published by mobile operators are accurate and up to date.

“A key component of this audit will leverage Australia Post vehicles traveling across the country to provide a clear and precise evidence base for targeting mobile blackspots.”

The statement said a competitive bidding process will be used to identify a partner company to place mobile signal metering devices on vans and delivery trucks to ensure money is spent. wisely.

The audit is part of a broader better connectivity plan for regional and rural Australia, which includes an additional commitment of $400 million to expand regional mobile coverage and improve the resilience of communications systems, particularly in areas where the risk of natural disasters is higher.
