Not Mobile Episode 1: Don’t Sign Anything

In this first episode, learn about Viking Terrace, a park of manufactured homes in Northfield, Minnesota, which was purchased by Lakeshore Management in April 2022. Lakeshore immediately increased the rents for the lots by $65, from $420 to $485 (15 %), and tried to get residents to sign a new lease that likely violated Minnesota law. The lease included 35 pages of strict rules such as: children cannot play in the yards of other houses, residents must maintain trees in the park, residents cannot “loite” outside their house after 10 p.m., and more.

Meet the Viking Terrace residents and community organizers who responded quickly to Lakeshore and formed a Residents Association to fight back.

About NotMobile:

Not Mobile is a podcast about people in my hometown (Northfield, Minnesota) and across the state fighting to protect their communities and one of the most important forms of affordable housing: manufactured home parks.

Nationwide, corporations and private equity firms have bought up parks of manufactured homes and are extorting money from residents: often low-income residents, immigrants, working families, or people on fixed incomes (disability and social Security).

In April 2022, Lakeshore Management Inc, a company that is constantly raising rents while cutting amenities, purchased the Viking Terrace manufactured home park in Northfield, Minnesota.

This series shines a light on the residents, lawyers, community leaders, and local and state officials who are fighting back against Lakeshore and fighting for everyone’s right to have a safe and affordable community to call home.
