No 6 Mobile wins double sweep over seventh-seeded Crusaders; Head coach Alison Sellers-Cook records 500th career win

HATTIESBURG, Miss – Two of the NAIA’s top-ranked softball teams squared off Friday night, April 1, in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, as the sixth-ranked, undefeated Mobile University Rams took on the No. 1 William Carey Crusaders. 7 for a double conference. Going into the doubleheader on Friday, Mobile managed to put together a historic start to the 2022 season, winning 30 straight games without a recorded loss. William Carey entered Friday with an overall record of 32-3. Both teams sit atop the current SSAC softball standings as Friday’s bout was named the SSAC softball series of the week.

Double Header Recap – Rams Sweep Crusaders

In what quickly became a pitching duel in Game 1, Mobile finally scored the game’s first run in the sixth inning after a stolen sacrifice by Madilyne Sheffield. With the Rams leading 1-0 heading into the seventh and final inning, Mobile managed to squeeze through an insurance run in the top of the seventh following an error by William Carey that eventually scored. Jaden Morace. From there, the score held and the Rams won Game 1 2–0 for the team’s 31st straight win.

Emily Butts was dominant in the pitching circle, pitching his 14th full game of the season and allowing the Crusaders just three hits. Butts struck out six batters from William Carey and now sits 15-0 from the circle in 18 appearances, while lowering his ERA to 0.85 in 99 1/3 innings of work.

Offensively, Mobile beat William Carey 7-3 in Game 1, with Caitlin McRee being the only Ram to record multiple hits, finishing 2 for 4 at the plate with an RBI.

In Game 2, the Rams scored two runs early in the first inning against William Carey. Caitlin McRee laid down a perfect bunt for a tight game, scoring Jaden Morace third to start the score. Courtney Elzey followed later in the inning with an RBI single to left field that scored Kaylee Pullin.

Later in the game, Mobile pushed two more runs on the Crusaders in the fifth inning to add to the team’s current two-run lead. Jaden Morace Mark Kristen Black on a double from left field, his eighth double of the season. Kaylee Pullin followed with a single field to center that scored Morace and added to Pullin’s RBI season total. Pullin now has 42 team and conference points scored this year and currently ranks fourth in the entire NAIA Division with that total.

The Rams eventually won Game 2 4-0 over William Carey, to shut out the seventh-ranked team in the nation in two games and 14 innings. Brinkley Goff pitched his 13th full game of the season in 14 appearances in Game 2, while improving to 12-0 from the circle. Goff lowered his ERA to less than one at 0.96. Mobile’s ERA team sits just above one at 1.05.

On the plate, the two Jaden Morace and Kaylee Pullin finished with two hits per play and combined for three of Mobile’s four runs in the game.

Historic victory on Friday for the mobile head coach Alison Sellers-cook

History continues to be made for the University of Mobile softball program in the 2022 season as Mobile’s first win over the Crusaders was the Mobile head coach’s 500th career victory Alison Sellers-cook. Prior to Mobile, Sellers-Cook posted a 329-263 overall record at Spring Hill College as a head coach, while adding what is now a 172-52 overall record at Mobile in just his fifth season at the head of the program.

Sellers-Cook led his team to a new winning streak program record this season, which now stands at 32 after Friday’s two big wins over William Carey. The current winning streak places the 2022 mobile team eighth all-time in the NAIA in single-season win streaks, with the all-time record standing at 47 in a row for the 2017 University team. Additionally, the 2006 NAIA National Championship team at Mobile ranks second all-time in the NAIA’s best winning percentages at .962 (51-2), with the current 2022 team at UM currently on the way. to beat this record.

Another opponent ranked ahead

With two wins over William Carey putting Mobile in sole possession of first place in the current SSAC Softball standings, the Rams and Crusaders are scheduled to meet again on Tuesday, April 19 at UM Softball Field for a 4:00 p.m. CT start.

The Rams will return to non-conference action against another ranked opponent next Tuesday, April 5, when Mobile hosts the 15th-ranked Georgia Gwinnett Grizzlies. Tuesday afternoon’s doubleheader is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. CT at the UM Softball Field. Mobile swept Georgia Gwinnett in a doubleheader in Lawrenceville, Georgia earlier in the season.
