Mobile University enrolls largest freshman class in 7 years
Mobile University has enrolled its largest freshman class in seven years, and residence halls are nearly full as the fall 2022 semester begins.
The university has enrolled 273 freshmen, making it the largest class of new freshmen since 2015. Currently, 622 students live in residence halls, ranking site Niche rates as the #1 Best Dorm Room in Alabama.
Additionally, UM’s new Associate of Nursing degree program met its goal of 30 students for its first class. The five-semester nursing degree program aims to address local and national nursing shortages by preparing nursing students to enter the workforce quickly.
New scholarships
Mobile University President Lonnie Burnett said new scholarships and partnerships have helped boost student enrollment at the university, an area that has seen a decline in the past. national scale.
Burnett said the university has worked with donors to develop the LIFT (Learning Investments for Tomorrow) scholarship for incoming students from a five-county area who have financial need. The LIFT scholarship bridges a gap between tuition fees and the amount covered by financial aid and scholarships.
New partnerships created this year with Infirmary Health and Springhill Medical Center provided new scholarships for School of Nursing students earning the Associate of Nursing degree and Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree.
“Our corporate partners and donors view Mobile University and the Christian higher education we provide as a great investment in our community. We continue to develop new partnerships that will expand opportunities for even more students,” said Burnett.
Charity Wittner, vice president of student affairs, said preliminary census figures show UM reflects national trends in some areas, while bucking trends in others.
“We entered the fall following national trends and anticipating a 4-7% drop in the number of new students. We ended up having 8% more student enrollment for our traditional field program,” Wittner said.
Overall, preliminary census numbers show UM was part of a national trend, as the total registration count of 1,851 for fall 2022 fell 3% below the total of 1,911. in fall 2021. Undergraduate enrollment for online programs increased by 18%, while enrollment decreased for graduate programs. Final enrollment figures are not yet available for dual enrollment and early enrollment, but officials expect a slight drop from last year.
