Mobile opens 2022 season with 2-1 series win over No. 8 Keizer

WEST PALM BEACH, Florida – The Mobile University baseball team began the 2022 season in West Palm Beach, Fla. on January 28-29 with a three-game series against the No. 8 Keizer Seahawks. Despite dropping Game 1 of the series, the Rams bounced back in the final two games to win the series against Keizer and start the season on a high.

First game – KU 9, MOB 7

On Friday morning, Jan. 28, Mobile and Keizer met for the first time in baseball history to kick off the 2022 NAIA Baseball season. Bailey Sellers started for Mobile and pitched three innings while allowing just two runs. The Sellers retired four batters.

The Rams managed to beat the Seahawks 14-8, but allowed four Seahawks through home plate in the seventh inning to fall behind. After five runs, Mobile responded with three runs in the top of the eighth inning, but Keizer was able to close the door and take the series-opening victory.

in the loss, Brett Buck hit the first mobile home run of the season, a deep shot to left center field. Buck finished 2-5 with a home run and two RBIs in the loss. Tucker Musgrove joined Buck in collecting two hits and a home run in Game 1 while working a walk. The Musgrove circuit was a deep center-right workout. Joining Buck and Musgrove with notable lines on Friday morning was Trevor Wells. Wells finished 3-4 at home plate, driving one and working one baseballs.

Game 2 – MOB 2, KU 1 (7 innings)

In the seven-inning game two later Friday afternoon, the pitching was excellent for both teams as only three combined runs crossed the plate for both teams, with the first run not scoring until the sixth inning. . Mobile third basemen Lex Singleton drove a brace from two wide to start the scoring for the Rams as Tucker Musgrove started the game on the mound and pitched three scoreless innings for Mobile while collecting five strikeouts.

After Keizer responded to Mobile with a run in the bottom of the sixth, Caleb Coffey managed to close the door on Mobile, earning his first stoppage of the season and the Rams’ first win of the year. Coffey pitched two relief innings in the win and threw a no-out base-laden jam in the final inning.

Stephane Poche’, who battled injuries in his first two years as a Ram, made his collegiate debut on the mound in Game 2 and picked up the win on his debut. Poche’ finished pitching two innings and struck out two batters.

Game Three – MOB 7, KU 6

The next day, Mobile and Keizer were ready for rubber play in the three-game series. Due to personnel issues, Mobile received the home team on the scoreboard in the series finale. Keizer started the scoring in the top of the first inning by throwing a first home run from the mobile starter Kyle White, but White settled in and pitched three innings while recording three strikeouts.

Mobile had four runs in the second and third innings to take the lead, 4-1. The Rams then scored another run in the fifth inning to extend the lead. However, Keizer scored five runs in the sixth and seventh innings and regained the lead over the Rams.

The mobile dugout, however, did not lose confidence and scored two points by Blake Roberts double two runs to give the Rams another lead in the eighth inning. Roberts finished with three RBIs on two doubles on Saturday. Trevor Wells went from left field to the pitcher’s mound the last two innings to earn his first win at the mound this year. Wells was also able to blow a two-run homer in the win.

All in all, the Rams return home to Mobile, Alabama with a happy bus ride after starting the season 2-1 and beating No. 8 Keizer in a home-court series. The Rams are set to open their home portion of the schedule next Friday, Feb. 4 with two games. Mobile will host Cumberlands University and Midway University in a three-team tournament scheduled for February 4-5.
