Mobile Earns Run-Rule Victory to Begin Play in 2022 NAIA Softball World Series

COLUMBUS, Georgia – After a BYE in the first round of the 2022 NAIA Softball World Series, the top-seeded Rams of Mobile took on the Grand View University Vikings on Friday night, May 27 in Columbus and picked up a victory over the Vikings, 9 – 1.

Mobile’s nine runs were unanswered runs as Grand View scored the game’s first run in the top of the first inning while chasing Mobile’s starting pitcher Brinkley Goff after just four batters. Emily Butts came on for the Rams in the first and cruised through the rest of the game, allowing just one hit and one walk in 4 2/3 innings of work. Mobile’s offense collected a trio of runs in the second and third innings to take a definite lead as Butts took the win, improving to 23-0 from the pitching circle.

Errors came back to haunt the Vikings as the Grand View infield struggled, committing five errors in the five-inning game. Only four of Mobile’s nine runs were won by the Grand View pitching team. Despite the mistakes, the Rams offense remained warm and consistent, beating Grand View, 7-1. Jaden Morace, Caitlin McReeand Eila Infante each went 2 for 4 at the plate in Friday’s win, with Jaden Morace leading the Rams with two RBIs.

“It was huge for us” Mobile Head Coach Alison Sellers-cook said after the resounding victory. After trailing 1-0 early against the Vikings, Sellers-Cook gathered his team in the dugout before the start of the bottom of the first and reminded his players to play the same game the team had. played all season. “To come out there and put some points on the board, especially after we had a tough first inning, supporting the pitcher; that’s what they got, they supported each other all the time,” said Sellers-Cook.

The victory over Grand View advances Mobile into the winners group of the 2022 NAIA Softball World Series where they will face No. 5 team University of the Sciences and Arts (Okla.) on Saturday afternoon. The first pitch is scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m. CT.
