Mobile Business Messaging Market to Hit US$78 Billion by 2027: Report

The total value of the global mobile business messaging market will grow from US$48 billion in 2022 to US$78 billion by 2027, according to a new research report.

Research by Juniper Research found that this 63% growth will be driven by enterprise adoption of Rich Communication Services (RCS), enterprises leveraging end-to-end encryption and verified sender identities provided by RCS to reduce email fraud.

RCS is a messaging protocol that integrates rich media content, such as high-quality images, videos, and carousels, into a smartphone’s default messaging application.

Research has found that the global number of RCS commercial messages received will increase from 161 billion in 2022 to 639 billion by 2027 as companies in sectors dealing with sensitive data, such as banking and healthcare, migrate SMS traffic to more secure channels.

Juniper research noted that while verifying users on RCS acts as a first step in preventing email fraud, malicious gamers will increasingly identify ways to circumvent this requirement.

In response, the report urges firewall vendors to prioritize accurate detection of spam content via multimedia messaging, including images and external links.

The report noted that the United States will represent a key growth market for RCS with all Tier 1 carriers, including AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon, supporting rich media messaging solutions – and found that the total number of RCS commercial messages received in the United States will exceed 170 billion by 2027, if Apple introduces support for the messaging protocol on iOS within the next 3 years.

“Apple needs to support RCS to facilitate smooth and secure communications between mobile operating systems,” said research author Scarlett Woodford.

“The RCS protocol is likely to be deployed on the existing iMessage interface on iOS devices, to capitalize on user familiarity and maximize adoption.”
