Gone are the days when cell phones were just used for making calls and texting. Nowadays, people can play games on their phones, stream music and videos, and even use appliances in your home.

With the wide range of apps available on smartphones these days, there’s pretty much one app for everything. Believe it or not, there are mobile apps that can help you manage your anxiety.

While these apps are not a substitute for therapy or treatment if it becomes necessary, they can help make each day easier to bear.

What is anxiety?

Before we move on to the list of examples of mobile apps that can help you manage your anxiety, let’s first define what anxiety is. WebMD defines anxiety as “the way your brain responds to stress and alerts you to potential danger ahead”.

Examples of anxiety disorders include social anxiety disorder, panic disorder, separation anxiety, and even phobias.

A study found that teens who browse social media platforms for 3 hours a day have a 60% higher risk of developing mental health problems, including anxiety and depression.

With the way smartphones have been fully integrated into everyone’s daily life, it’s no surprise that mobile apps have been created to help people better manage their anxiety. Here are some examples of these mobile applications:

Breathing: breathing exercises

Many people who go through anxiety attacks end up having difficulty breathing. One of the mobile apps that can help you manage your breathing is called Breathwrk: Breathing Exercises.

According to a Healthline article, Breathwrk “takes the science of breathing exercises even further by organizing a collection of breathing exercises based on your goal: to fall asleep, feel relaxed, feel energized, or relieve stress.”

You can use the app to track your breathing habits and it can even send you daily reminders.

Breathwrk: Breathing exercises can be downloaded on iOS and Android devices.

Calmed down

Calm is probably one of the best mobile apps for anxiety available in app stores these days. Although you do have to pay to access some of the app’s features, there are actually a variety of free features that you can use to help manage your anxiety.

According to a Verywell Mind article, Calm’s free features include a sleep story called “Blue Gold” and timed meditation options. A premium membership will give you access to a library of sleep stories and several hours of guided meditation focusing on anxiety, stress, sleep and more.

Calm can be downloaded on iOS and Android devices.

Colored

You probably haven’t bought crayons or a coloring box since you were a kid, but believe it or not, coloring is actually a great way to deal with your anxiety.

The Verywell Mind cites a 2012 study that “examined the use of art therapy to reduce anxiety with a group of undergraduates.” The results of the study showed that the students exhibited decreased anxiety levels when doing art therapy.

A coloring app recommended by Verywell Mind and Healthline is Colorfy. According to the Healthline article, the app offers sketches and mandalas for users to color. Users also have the option of uploading their own sketches for coloring.

Colorfy is available for iOS and Android devices.
