M-PESA Mobile Money reaches 30 million monthly active customers in Kenya as loan products drive growth
Kenya’s leading telecommunications operator, Safaricom, has announced that its popular mobile money service, M-PESA, now has more than 30 million customers using the platform in Kenya alone.
With Kenya having 30 million customers, this means the service has 51 million customers across East Africa. Here are the countries where MPESA is operational:
- Kenya
- Tanzania
- Democratic Republic of Congo
- mozambique
- Lesotho
- Ghana
- Egypt

Safaricom highlights its spirit of innovation as the reason for its steady growth by highlighting the products that have driven its success, including:
Safaricom also highlights its local and international partnerships with organizations such as PayPal, AliExpress and Western Union that make it easy for customers to send and receive money across borders.
Earlier this year, the Central Bank of Kenya revealed that M-PESA is the primary and preferred way Kenyans around the world send money to family members and friends back home.
M-PESA also revealed that its business payment service, Lipa Na M-PESA, has more than doubled from 173,000 in April 2020 to over 387,000 today.
Safaricom and its parent company, Vodacom, are looking to expand further across Africa by introducing its super app to customers and businesses across the continent.
