Mangaluru: A vigilant police officer in Mangaluru, Karnataka chased after a thief who was trying to get away after snatching a worker’s mobile phone. The police officer identified as Varun Alva has gained internet fame along with a cash reward of Rs 10,000.

The whole incident that happened on Wednesday was caught on camera. The accused thief has been identified as Harish Poojary (32). The thief snatched a phone from Prem Narayan Yogi, a granite worker from Rajasthan, who was resting near Nehru Maidan.

The worker raised an alarm and began to chase the phone thief. Alva, who is an assistant sub-inspector of Mangaluru town police, was stationed at the scene with a team of police officers, according to a report by Indian Express.

Alva chased Poojary and grabbed him even as his gang members tried to create diversions. The incident was recorded on a cellphone on Wednesday. The case broke when the video went viral on social media.

Police also managed to nab another accomplice of Poojary, while the third accused Rajesh managed to get away.

Praising Alva’s efforts, Mangaluru City Police Commissioner announced a cash reward of Rs 10,000 for the policeman. According to the police, the defendants operated in the town of Mangaluru and were involved in multiple robberies and burglaries.
