Habitat for Humanity Builds Home for Mobile Veteran and Son

MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) – A home is one step closer to reality for a local veteran and his son.

The Southwest Alabama chapter of Habitat for Humanity began building a home on Dauphin Island Parkway Saturday for Keith McCall and his 12-year-old son.

McCall is an Air Force veteran and says a medical condition left him disabled and made it difficult for him to earn money and has never been able to buy a house until now thanks to Habitat for Humanity.

“I’m ecstatic, the joy is real, owning a home is a dream,” McCall said.

The house began construction Saturday by McCall and Habitat for Humanity volunteers.

It should be finished in about a year.

“He came in and he was in a position where he needed help and he wanted to be a landlord, but he couldn’t quite go into a bank, so he came into our office and said what do I do. do to be here?” said Courtney Rouse-Heinz, Habitat for Humanity’s executive director for southwest Alabama.

Rouse-Heinz says they are building many homes throughout the community for people in need and are always accepting applications.

McCall owns the land they are building on in the Bon Aire Estates community, but has never had the means to build a house there.

Once it’s finished, it will still pay a mortgage on it.

“It’s not a handout, it’s a helping hand. People have to go through a process, they get a mortgage, they pay a monthly payment like everyone else,” Rouse-Heinz said.

McCall says he has a lot to be grateful for and owes it all to his faith for getting him to where he is today.

“I am grateful to the highest and know that it is through his son Jesus Christ that everything is possible,” McCall said.
