Spending on mobile games reached $44.7 billion, while the entertainment category recorded the highest spending among non-gaming apps at $4.4 billion. The books category generated $1.1 billion.

TikTok was the top-grossing non-gaming app on the App Store and Google Play, with consumers spending more than $920 million on TikTok, up 74% from the same period last year.

YouTube was the second-highest-grossing offline app, followed by dating app Tinder, Japanese comic book reader Piccoma and Disney streaming platform Disney+.

First installs on Google Play rose 6% to 56.2 billion, helped by the prevalence of Android devices in markets still heavily impacted by the pandemic, such as India, according to Sensor Tower.

Apple’s App Store, however, saw a decline in installs, dropping about 11% to 16.3 billion from 18.3 billion the previous year. Sensor Tower notes that this could be due to the reopening of businesses and in-person spaces in the United States. The United States has a high concentration of iOS users.
