Cucuruz Doan Island scores 300 million yen in three days

The Mobile Suit Gundam: Cucuruz Doan The Twitter account revealed on Sunday that the film earned 300 million yen (~$2.3 million) at the Japanese box office, with viewership reaching 150,000. The film debuted in the country on June 3.

Also, Kogyo Tsushin Ranking for the weekend of June 4 to June 5 lists the film in 3rd place, placing it above anime competitors like The Quintessential Quintuplets film, Detective Conan: Halloween’s Brideand Crayon Shin-chan: Mononoke Ninja Chinpuuden.

The previous Gundam movie, 2021 Mobile Suit Gundam Hathawayalso third for its first weekend, but earned more than 500 million yen (~$3.8 million) in its first three days. Whereas hathaway was in competition with films like Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Once Upon a Time (who took 1st place in hathawaythe first weekend of , when it was in the 14th week of its broadcast at the time), the Rurouni Kenshin: The Final movies, and Detective Conan: The Scarlet Bullet Cucuruz Doan comes at a time when Top Gun: Maverick and ShinUltramanwhich premiered on May 13 and May 27 respectively, dominates the Japanese box office.

Mobile Suit Gundam: Cucuruz Doan’s Island is based on the original Mobile Suit Gundam 15th episode of the series. The premise sees Amuro Ray and the crew of White Base discover an island inhabited by a deserter from Zeon and several children.

Other staff include I am Ga-Hee (sonny boy episode director) as an assistant director, Toshizō Nemoto (Bakuten!!) as a screenwriter, Yuji Kaneko (Josée, the tiger and the fish) as artistic director, Nagisa Abe (SCARLET CONNECTION) as a color creator, Morihito Abe (Mobile Suit Gundam: Hathaway co-director CG) as director CG, and Takayuki Hattori (space brothers live action film) as a music composer.

Also, Yasuhiko, Atsushi Tamura (grow old with you co-character designer) and Tsukasa Kotobuki (Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin co-character designer) serve as character designers, while Kunio Okawara (GUNDAM BREAKER BATTLOGUE mecha co-designer, Mobile Suit Gundam) and Kimitoshi Yamane (Mobile G Gundam Fighter and Mobile Suit Gundam: Hathaway co-mecha designer) serve as mecha designers with Katoki. Sunrise is the animation production company.
