Computers, sewing machines and mobile phones among items Rotarians in Ribble Valley collect for school children in UK and Africa

Rotarians will return to Clitheroe Market on the first Saturday of the month for three months, starting tomorrow (Saturday, April 2). The following dates will be May 7 and June 4.

They will collect sewing machines, tools, glasses, blister packs and cell phones that they no longer want. They also accept computers and laptops, which must be Windows 7 or higher, flat screens, cables, keyboards but not printers as their partners, ‘IT Schools Africa’ cannot easily obtain all the different types of ink cartridges.

And the club will also collect unwanted foreign currency, paper banknotes or coins as well as foreign stamps.

Last year, the collection produced 47 sewing machines, three tool vans, 1,500 pairs of glasses and a huge amount of aluminum blister packs, which they pass on to Superdrug, who resell them to recover the aluminum, whose proceeds go to Marie Curie.

The club recently raised 20 tonnes of goods and over £4,500 in cash through donations in the Ribble Valley for Ukraine

Rotary International spokesman Howard Blackburn said, “Rotary will reassess what we do next to help Ukrainians who have stayed in their country or who have moved to Europe and the UK. In the meantime, we can only accept monetary donations.

“Thank you to local businesses who provided vans, boxes, duct tape, local restaurant staff who tipped, St Mary’s Center for lending the hall, and non-Rotarian volunteers.”
