Chad is slowly developing the fixed broadband sector

Chad’s fixed telecommunications infrastructure is underdeveloped even by the region’s low standards. Most voice and data connectivity is via Moov Africa Chad and Airtel Chad mobile networks. Although both operators struggle to generate revenue in a market where customers have little disposable income, they are supported by being local business units of significant regional players.

Both operators have nevertheless seen their subscriber bases grow steadily in recent years. Moov Africa Chad reported a 14.2% increase in mobile subscribers in the year to September 2021.

While Moov and Airtel are focusing their investments in mobile network infrastructure to extend the reach of their 3G and LTE services, there are also tentative investments in fixed broadband. Given that the country’s copper network is very meager and largely confined to the capital N’Djamena, there is a business case for developing new fiber rather than bothering to upgrade existing copper. At the end of 2021, Moov announced its intention to launch an FTP network limited to N’Djamena during 2022.

This is only the beginning of a potential development in the fixed telephony sector which will be supported by Chad’s increased connectivity to international fiber cables. Chad participates in the 500 km Trans-Saharan Backbone as well as the Central African Backbone and other cables. Since mid-2020, the government has funded several ICT projects, including a new national data center and associated 1,200 km fiber optic network, a 50 km metro network in N’Djamena and 200 additional mobile towers for Hotel Chad.

National Internet capacity has increased from 270 Mb/s in 2017 to 5,479 Mb/s in 2020. This increase is largely due to the Chad-Sudan link, which has also reduced wholesale access costs. In turn, the cost of retail access has come down, making connectivity more viable for a larger proportion of the population.
